We're SO close to Releasing Gameplay Footage

This week has been a bit of a crunch for the team as we’re frantically trying to tie up loose ends and show the public all of the changes we’ve made to the project since we announced Zy Universe last fall.

[Next: We've released gameplay footage after months in the dark.]

One of the stipulations Chris (co-founder of Zy) and I had on the dev team was that before taking this “re-announcement” step, we needed to be able to play the game over the internet.

We had early iterations of our multiplayer framework very early on, but as we’re inching closer to release we’ve had to circle back on the network stuff and get a lot cleaned up. With that, we’ve already had successful multiplayer tests within the team.

Beyond networking, we’ve been putting most of our focus on early systems, like player movement, physics, and early combat mechanics. These things are essential and will set the groundwork for us to build and add other awesome features.

As for art side, the team has been working to pretty up our current playable space as much as possible. This has us making a lot of environmental things, like lamps and chests, just to add more ambiance to the scene.

Did you know Zy Universe takes place in a holo-simulator? When we were working on the RPG, we came up with a very deep storyline that would serve as a backstory and game story, as well as create a universe (ha!) we could build off of.

When we decided to change directions and focus on the PvP, we still wanted the game to fit into the story. So we came up with players being soldiers in a training holo-simulator as our setting. This disconnected the players from the narrative, while still being able to make total sense in our backstory.

It will also allow us to get as creative as we want with the levels since they’re holograms. We’ll be able to have a lot more arcadey things happen, like weapons appearing out of nowhere and bodies dissolving on death.

Speaking of which, check out this early prototype of our death animation -
